Finding the Minimum of a Function

چکیده
Adaptive query algorithms for finding the minimum of a function f are studied. The algorithms build on the earlier adaptive algorithms given in [5, 7]. The rate of convergence of these algorithms is estimated under various model assumptions on the function f . The first class of algorithms is analyzed when f satisfies a smoothness condition, e.g. f ∈ C, and an assumption on its level sets as given in [7]. There is a distinction drawn as to whether or not the algorithm has knowledge of the semi-norm |f |Cr . If this information is known, it is rather straightforward to design algorithms with optimal performance and to show that this performance is better than non-adaptive algorithms. A bit more subtle is to build algorithms which are universal in that they do not need to know the semi-norm of f . Universal algorithms are built that have the same asymptotic performance as when the semi-norm is known, save for a logarithm. The second part of this paper studies adaptive algorithms for finding the minimum of a function in high dimension. In this case, additional assumptions are placed on f , of the form given in [3], that have the effect of variable reduction and thereby avoiding the curse of dimensionality. These algorithms are again shown to be asymptotically optimal up to a logarithm factor.

A Smoothing Technique for the Minimum Norm Solution of Absolute Value Equation
One of the issues that has been considered by the researchers in terms of theory and practice is the problem of finding minimum norm solution. In fact, in general, absolute value equation may have infinitely many solutions. In such cases, the best and most natural choice is the solution with the minimum norm. In this paper, the minimum norm-1 solution of absolute value equation is investigated. ...
متن کاملRoman k-Tuple Domination in Graphs
For any integer $kgeq 1$ and any graph $G=(V,E)$ with minimum degree at least $k-1$, we define a function $f:Vrightarrow {0,1,2}$ as a Roman $k$-tuple dominating function on $G$ if for any vertex $v$ with $f(v)=0$ there exist at least $k$ and for any vertex $v$ with $f(v)neq 0$ at least $k-1$ vertices in its neighborhood with $f(w)=2$. The minimum weight of a Roman $k$-tuple dominatin...
متن کاملThe Theory of Concentration Oligopoly
This paper originates the theory of buyer concentration for a main raw material input for a single processing industry. The Oligopsony concentration is obtained and subsequently decomposed into several factors, affecting indirectly the industry’s profitability. It is found that the leading firms’ efficiencies hypothesis is reaffirmed due to variations associated with the marginal productivity d...
متن کاملOn the computational complexity of finding a minimal basis for the guess and determine attack
Guess-and-determine attack is one of the general attacks on stream ciphers. It is a common cryptanalysis tool for evaluating security of stream ciphers. The effectiveness of this attack is based on the number of unknown bits which will be guessed by the attacker to break the cryptosystem. In this work, we present a relation between the minimum numbers of the guessed bits and uniquely restricted...
متن کاملINTEGRATING CASE-BASED REASONING, KNOWLEDGE-BASED APPROACH AND TSP ALGORITHM FOR MINIMUM TOUR FINDING
Imagine you have traveled to an unfamiliar city. Before you start your daily tour around the city, you need to know a good route. In Network Theory (NT), this is the traveling salesman problem (TSP). A dynamic programming algorithm is often used for solving this problem. However, when the road network of the city is very complicated and dense, which is usually the case, it will take too long fo...
متن کاملFinding the Best Coefficients in the Objective Function of a Linear Quadratic Control Problem
Finding the best weights of the state variables and the control variables in the objective function of a linear-quadratic control problem is considered. The weights of these variables are considered as two diagonal matrices with appropriate size and so the objective function of the control problem becomes a function of the diagonal elements of these matrices. The optimization problem which is d...
